Breaking Hard Wax & Scale with EMT Piping's Cavitation Jet Pig
Background
An operator running a long-distance multi-product pipeline faced a steady drop in throughput after a scheduled shutdown. Inspection at several low points revealed a thick layer of fused paraffin wax and mineral scale that had hardened against the pipe wall — a condition conventional cup pigs could only scrape superficially.
Challenge
The deposits had partially cemented, raising two risks: a pig could become stuck in the long, low-lying section, and insufficient cleaning would compromise an upcoming verification run, forcing a costly re-clean.
Solution
EMT Piping deployed its cavitation jet pig. High-velocity jet nozzles generate cavitation bubbles that collapse directly on the deposit surface, fracturing and loosening hard scale and wax without damaging the line. The program was sequenced: a gauging pig to confirm bore integrity, the cavitation jet pig for deposit liberation, then polyurethane (PU) cleaning pigs to carry the debris to the receiving trap. Pig velocity was held within the recommended operating window using real-time pig-tracking and trap-pressure monitoring.
Results
The combined run recovered a near-full bore and removed a substantial volume of wax/scale debris at the receiver. Post-run verification supported a successful first-attempt verification run, and the operator avoided chemical batching entirely — lowering both cost and environmental load. Throughput recovered to pre-shutdown levels within the same maintenance window.
